The Promise of Understanding
The National Health Service is 70 this year. Its promise of universal healthcare, free at the point of need, is as relevant today as in 1948. But much has changed about lifestyles, medicine, and people’s expectations of healthcare.
Matt will tell the story of the new mobile-first, accessible NHS website, and the building of NHS Digital’s capability in service, interaction and graphic design.
Every designer in the NHS needs intelligence and empathy. They have to care about the details – like a parent giving their child the right dose of paracetamol – and the big picture – interoperability of IT systems to make the NHS function coherently.
Looking to the future, what role might human-centred design play in realising the potential of new medicine and technology? How might we support people’s understanding and help them take control of their health and care?
